Reflections

My motivation for putting on a basketball camp in Gunnison Valley was simple. I wish to one day go back to there and become a basketball coach. I thought that by putting on a basketball camp there it shows the community that I care about the basketball program as well as the leadership of the school. It also was to give me some experience coaching kids in basketball and learning some techniques that both work and did not work. The process of putting the camp on went fairly well for me mostly because I have many connections both with the school and community in means of getting a court to use and also getting the word spread about the camp. I talked to the principal of the high school and got permission to use the gym. I created a flyer which I shared on Facebook and had posted around town as well as given to the basketball coaches. The rest was fairly simple I just had the athletes RSVP with me or my mother and we got signed up and put on the camp. I had several goals in this camp. One was to put on a camp that was both fun and effective for the students and give them a knowledge of drills that they can do to build their basketball skill set. Second goal was to give myself some coaching experience. Even though I was not teaching things such as plays and having an actual team to coach I got to learn to coach athletes on an individual level to work on solo aspects of the game, and learn strategies to help the athletes in their training. I feel like the outcome of the camp was very positive. I have had many of the parents and athletes that were in my camp come up to me over the past year asking if I am going to put on another one. That shows me that the kids had fun at the camp and are excited about getting to play the sport. The money that I raised through the camp also funded the program to get new basketballs and other equipment. I feel like I really did contribute to the growth of the Gunnison Valley basketball program. Skills that I used through this camp include leadership, communication and advertising. Leadership skills are very important both as a teacher and a basketball coach which I hope to be both one day. I feel as though I have always had some natural leadership ability but through this camp I got to practice these skills and refine them. One of the biggest skills that I gained and refined in the duration of the camp was instructional skills. I always thought explaining how to do certain things would be fairly easy… I was wrong. I progressively got better with my directions throughout the time at the camp and by the end I had kind of figured out the language and how detailed my instruction needed to be in order for the athletes to understand what I was telling them to do. One trick that I picked up on was instructing by demonstration. Doing half speed walk through with verbal instruction I found was probably the most effective way to make the kids understand the drills I wanted them to do. Advertisement skills I have never really worked on in my life, so getting the opportunity to have to advertise for my camp let me build my understanding of how to get the word out about something such as a camp. I believe that Southern Utah University put the EDGE program in place to give us a head start of students from other universities. It gives us the ability to be creative and in charge of a good project that builds our resume for future application in life.

Moose's Hoops for Hoops Basketball Camp

For my EDGE project I put on a youth basketball camp with the idea of helping the future of Gunnison Valley High School basketball. The camp showed the community and the administration in Gunnison that I care about the school and let me get my foot in the door hopefully for a job in the future. My objectives for this EDGE project were Making Gunnison Valley’s basketball teams more successful. This objective is hard for me to show proof that I was successful because most of the athletes that I had at camp were below high school age, so they haven’t competed in high school basketball yet to know if they were successful or not. Showing the administration of Gunnison Valley High School that I want to help build the basketball team, hopefully getting my foot in the door to become a coach. Through the process of this EDGE project I became close with the principal, vice principal, and athletic director at Gunnison valley High School, so I would say this objective was achieved. Lastly showing the community of Gunnison that I care about the youth there and giving them an enjoyable experience playing basketball. When I go around the community in Gunnison I have kids that came to my camp come up and ask me if I am going to put on another camp and tell me that they had a good time. I also have parents asking me to put on another camp for the kids so I believe this was successful as well.
